Vitrectomy Procedure

Vitrectomy Procedure

Vitrectomy is a specialized eye surgery used to treat a range of serious, retinal conditions, including :

  • retinal detachment
  • macular holes,
  • complications from diabetic retinopathy
  • severe eye trauma (like a puncture) or a serious internal infection called endophthalmitis.

The vitreous is the clear gel-like substance that fills the eye. During vitrectomy it is removed to give the surgeon access to the retina to be able to address conditions affecting vision. Then it replaced with a special saline solution, gas bubble, or silicon oil, depending on the condition being treated.
